What is a Seed Library and why have one?

A seed library is a community-based program where members can share and distribute seeds to grow their own food, herbs, and flowers (though typically the emphasis is on food).  This method of sharing seeds enriches the gardening community by allowing beginner and experienced gardeners alike the opportunity to find, grow, and save seeds that are new to them and even keep some local heritage varieties going.  Seed libraries also allow people who otherwise may not be able to grow their own food access to free seeds and education, to move toward personal food security and sustainability.

It's easy to get started at the Seed Library!

  1. Fill out the Seed Library Membership Form located by the seed drawers in the library.

  2. Put your name on a Member Seed Record Form and put it in the Seed Member Binder.

  3. Find the seeds you want in the drawers and mark which seeds you have taken on your Member Seed Record form.

  4. If you are planning to save seeds, gather them from the plants and donate them back using the donation form provided.
